About the Scholarship

The Coach Russ Morrell Memorial Scholarship is established for the sole purpose of assisting aspiring South Dakota students in their efforts to achieve degrees from institutions of higher learning (post secondary education). Russ Morrell spent his entire professional life in service to others as a teacher and coach. He did so with unmatched optimism and incredible resourcefulness that inspired his students and players to the same. This fund will continue his mission and legacy in perpetuity by providing a $1,000 award to a worthy SD student.

Applicants for this scholarship award must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Graduate of a South Dakota high school seeking to attend a two or four year post secondary school.
    • Preference may be given to a student from Burke, Bon Homme or Wagner high schools
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA through 7 semesters of high school.
  • Be involved in extracurricular activities and community service. Provide a list of the activities.
  • Provide contact information (phone and email) of two character references that can speak on behalf of the applicant to demonstrate perseverance, tenacity, and dedication to the service of others.
  • Submit a 300 to 500-word essay detailing a personal story which illustrates an event in which you demonstrated resourcefulness and optimism in the face of adversity.
Funds shall be distributed to award recipients directly through their school of choice just prior to each term for a given year.
